Colon Cancer Screening in North Houston

What is colorectal cancer?

Colorectal cancer, also referred to as colon cancer or rectal cancer, is a type of cancer that is found in the colon or rectum. Colorectal cancer occurs when cells that line either the rectum or the colon change and begin to grow. This results in a colon tumor, which can go unnoticed in early stages due to a lack of symptoms. This is why it is very important to visit a colon cancer specialist at Allied Digestive Disease Center of Houston for a routine colorectal cancer screening test, which can detect abnormal cells and growths at their earliest stages.

What causes colorectal cancer?

There is currently no known cause for colon or rectal cancer, however, doctors do know that it is the result of an irregularity in the genes that make up your colon or rectum. When the irregularity occurs, the cells continue to create new cells, even when they are not needed. This results in what is known as a colorectal tumor or cancer, and over time can spread throughout the body and cause serious damage to nearby healthy cells.

While there is no exact cause for colon cancer, there are some factors that may increase your chances of developing the condition. These include:

  • Being older than 45
  • Having a family history of colon cancer
  • Improper exercise
  • Smoking
  • Heavy use of alcohol
  • Poor diet
  • Prior history of colorectal cancer

While some of these factors cannot be controlled, it’s recommended that those who are at risk for colorectal cancer make lifestyle changes wherever possible to reduce the chances of developing the disease. These changes might include drinking in moderation, quitting smoking, and implementing a healthy diet and exercise routine.
